While reading American Born Chinese, I found it very interesting how, although the entire book is a cartoon, the characters that were more stereotypically Asian, had more absurd, unrealistic, and/or cartoon-like features. For example, Jin is Chinese, but his eyes are fairly round, with just a small half circle on the top to differentiate him from the simply American characters. Wei-Chen, however has very animated-looking eyes with his large, round glasses. When Wei-Chen laughs while speaking with Amelia about the bubbles on her shoulder, his eyes are shown by just two small, half circles. The herbalist is depicted with closed eyes. Chin-Lee is also depicted with closed eyes that look swollen. He also has exaggerated, bucked teeth. Danny, who is American, is said to ave bucked teeth by Melanie when she says, “You know, I never noticed it before, but your teeth kind of buck out a little bit. My uncle’s an Orthodontist. I’ve got his card in here somewhere.” But, even when it is addressed through the dialogue, Danny does not look unrealistic or absurd.
