For BPL5100 Students

Students in one of the BPL5100 classes I met with last week asked for industry-specific guides. Until I can develop some, I have added a page of industry resources to the BPL5100 Guide. These are the industries that are included: automobiles, oil and gas, lodging, restaurants, freight & logistics, pharmaceuticals, retailing and telecommunications.

Group Site for QuestionPoint at CUNY

I recently created a group site on the CUNY Academic Commons for librarians in CUNY that monitor chat reference via our shared QuestionPoint subscription. I’d like to make this site the main location where librarians at the 8 subscribing libraries in CUNY can find announcements and discussions.

If you haven’t already set up an account on the CUNY Academic Commons, you’ll need to do that first before you can join the group.

Please let me know if you have any questions about this new site.

Thanks.

Past Masters trial until April 30

CUNY is sponsoring a trial to Past Masters until April 30. It is available on campus only via the databases page or here.

This database contains the works of classic literature, philosophy, political science and more. The e-books are not downloadable to a reader.

While versions of many of these are in the public domain, Past Masters offers scholarly editions with the full academic apparatus of notes/linking/etc.  There are also some powerful search features available within and across texts.

While it is a database, each title is purchased individually, so we could pick and choose.

Please let me know what you think, either by email or below in the comments.

Report re bankruptcy that might be requested

Several auditing students have asked for help in finding information aboutNew Century Financial Corporation, a subprime lender that filed for bankruptcy in 2007.

There has also been complaints for fraud brought by the SEC (searchable on the SEC site and also CCH Accounting Research Manager) and also some class action securities litigation, found on the Stanford University securities class action website.

A report by  bankruptcy examiner Missal has been requested.  Although these reports are not usually available full-text, the document was unsealed by the Delaware bankruptcy court and posted on the website of the law firm Missal is associated with.  It runs over 500 pages. An explanation of the report is available.
