RefWorks No Longer Works with the Catalog
If you want to save/export citations from the catalog, you’ll want to do so using OneSearch instead, as the RefWorks export from the catalog no longer works. The CUNY Office of Library Services says it is unlikely there will be a way to fix this problem.
Another option that offers students more flexibility in the long run is to suggest Zotero instead, which still works fine with the catalog as well as OneSearch and all of our bibliographic databases (and Amazon, nytimes.com, Wikipedia, etc.).
Planned Downtime for ProQuest Databases on 28 February
Beginning at 10 pm Eastern time on Saturday, February 28, and continuing for up to five hours, ProQuest databases and services will be down for planned site maintenance. This affects:
- ABI/INFORM Global
- Alt-PressWatch
- American Periodicals
- Books in Print
- ebrary
- Ethnic NewsWatch
- Gannett Newsstand
- GenderWatch
- New York Times (1851-2010)
- PAIS International
- RefWorks
- Wall Street Journal (1889-1997)
It may also affect the display of book jacket art in the catalog and OneSearch, as ProQuest also owns the Syndetics service that provides that art.
All ProQuest Databases Down on February 15
On Saturday, February 15, beginning at 10 pm and continuing for up to eight hours, all ProQuest databases will be offline for scheduled maintenance. Affected databases and services include:
- ABI/INFORM Global
- Alt-PressWatch
- American Periodicals
- EthnicNewsWatch
- Gannett Newsstand
- GenderWatch
- New York Times (1851-2010)
- PAIS International
- ProQuest Digital Microfilm
- RefWorks
- Wall Street Journal (1889-1996)
This will not affect ebrary (it will be available during the maintenance work).
New Interface for ScienceDirect
Today, ScienceDirect has gone live with a new interface. Here’s what Elsevier highlights as the biggest changes:
Thoroughly user-tested, ScienceDirect has been upgraded to make it easier to find relevant articles and books, read an article online, discover open access content and export to Mendeley.
The new release has four key upgrades:
- A simplified user experience, with less visual clutter and improved design
- Better visibility of open access content
- Quicker discovery of relevant ScienceDirect content from search engines
- Seamless export of citations and full-text articles to Mendeley
A note about Elsevier’s spotlighting Mendeley: Elsevier acquired that citation management system a year ago, which is why they’re focusing on it here. Export to Zotero and RefWorks are equally easy to use.
Format Citations from Google Scholar Search Results
Google announced today a new feature that lets you format a citation for items on your Google Scholar search results page. Just look for the link “Cite” that appears in the snippet of text below the article:
If you click “Cite,” you get a new window with citations for that item in MLA, APA, and Chicago formats as well as options to export the citation into various citation management systems (e.g, RefWorks, EndNote, etc.)
RefWorks has a new interface
I have updated the default interface for RefWorks to its new 2.0 interface. This new interface is in my opinion a big improvement over the older one – more user friendly, cleaner, easier to understand. The URL and access to it remains the same.
If you want to look to the older interface “RefWorks Classic”, there is a button on the top right that will take you back to that interface.
If you don’t see the new interface when you log-in, you may have to clear your cache.
Please let me know if you run into any issues or have any questions.
