Metamorphosis

The narrator decided to discuss this video because she is planning on going to a University for English and creative writing. She creates this video as a reminder for herself as to why she found Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka to be so impressive. She finds that the book can be interpreted differently for every person. Her interpretation to Gregor’s metamorphosis is similar to a child experiencing puberty. Their body feels alien to themselves. She continues by analyzing the story as the events happen, starting off with after he has transformed. Which leads to the second metamorphosis she brings up, the family’s reaction and the way they deal with Gregor. Originally Greta was supportive of Gregor’s change but as time went on her demeanor towards him grew worse. She felt Gregor was a burden. These emotions was felt not only by Greta, but his family as well. She compares this to the family of a patient with an incurable disease. The disease not only affects the patient, but the family as well. The family members are pained as well when having a family member with an incurable disease. Her third metamorphosis she finds is that it’s a metaphor for Kafka’s life. The narrator uses the research she finds of Kafka’s childhood to make the connection. She states that Gregor’s father resembles Kafka’s own father. They both are authoritative as well as being abusive. Kafka also felt trapped and isolated since he had to live with his parents even though he was already older. At the end, Gregor’s decline which led to death reflects Kafka’s mental state as he had diaries with the desire to die. The narrator focuses on metamorphosis as she finds that there can be so many different interpretations for it. She comes up with three possible interpretations for the meaning metamorphosis.
