New Year’s Sacrifice

In many households, the children are forced by their parents to follow traditional views. Being forced to follow their view, does not allow any freedom for the child. Some parents are so strict, they would rather disregard and hate their own child then allow leeway in views on tradition. The children become afraid of their own parents and do not dare retaliate. For example, when the parents are religious and forces the child to be the same. Unfortunately, if the child does not believe in it, it only causes a rift between the parents and the child. The child does not want to speak out against the parent and instead resents them. Times are changing and as the years go by, traditional views do not hold up to modern times. Slavery was once considered legal, but nowadays it is surprising that it was even allowed. As it had occurred for generations, society took it as the norm and passed it down to their children as how society should normally function. But as time went by society’s view changed and got rid of this thinking. Although that is an extreme case, it does hold true to many cases today where science and technology was not as advanced as it is today. Cases like homosexuality cannot be changed just because their parents want them to. Now with advancements in science, scientists realize that homosexuality is not something that can be changed on a whim but is a part of that person’s identity. I am grateful to have a family that is open-minded. My parents are open to new ideas and willing to discard traditional values. I was not forced to believe in their religion. Even when I was young, they did not try impose their traditional values on me. This made me respect and follow those values that they did believe were important.
