The video presents four people sitting together dressed professionally in a discussion. They are portrayed as being well-educated through their attire and the setting they are in. The background includes a LED screen of the book to further show to the audience that they are knowledgeable in the subject. Using these methods, they are able to persuade the audience into believing their views. For their discussion of the book, they have one of them as the mediator who guides the questions to the other three. The three commentators are part of WhatSoProudlyWeHail, a group that analyzes literary works. In this video, the mediator particularly focus on the questions, “What is the work of a scrivener?” and “What is Bartleby and the lawyer’s relationship with letters?”. The co-editor of the group, Diana Schaub, answers the question in detail, while also providing an analysis of why the author, Herman Melville, included these ideas. She states that an important line in the book was the rumor that Bartleby worked in a Dead Letter Office. She says that Bartleby finds no difference in the letters written in the Dead Letter Office and the lawyer’s office which both led to quickening his death. She is able to connect this to how he has given up on words which would explain why he only spoke few words and towards the end just started at a wall. She then contrasts this to the lawyer who instead is “wedded” to words. The lawyer, on the other hand, finds it necessary to include letters in everything. Schaub provides the audience her insight on the relationship Bartleby and the lawyer has with letters. This group, WhatSoProudlyWeHail, also has many other videos on this book that answers different questions that may arise. The group provides a great analysis of the book and why the author, Melville, included these ideas.
