The video I have chosen was based on a stage adaptation of Frankenstein directed by Nick Dear in 2011 at the Royal National Theatre. The director and actors discuss their thoughts on the actors and the roles they have to play as The Creature and Victor Frankenstein. The video mixes their observations with clips of scenes from the play. They believe that Victor did not care about his creation. The moment it was created, he abandoned the creature to suffer in the world. The actor believed that Victor acted this way because he was too prideful and arrogant. He believed he could create life without the use of normal biological means. The play has a unique twist where the actor for The Creature switches roles with the actor for Victor Frankenstein. Every other showing, the actors play the other role in order to gain a better sense of the characters. They believe that the bond between Victor and The Creature can be enhanced through playing both roles. In doing so, it fuses the two characters. The actor for the Creature the first day will carry some of the personality of Victor the next day when he himself has to play Victor. This allows each showing to be unique and continue improving as the actors become more intertwined. On the other hand, this allows the play to be watched more than once. Watching it a second time allows the viewer to see the differences between how the roles are played by each actor. The actors enjoyed playing two both roles because each night is something new. There is no worry about what happened the night before as they are fixed towards the present and they feel that is what is necessary to be a good actor. This stage adaptation of Frankenstein presents Victor and The Creature as one being as the two actors constantly swap roles.
