QUEENIE MEI

My life matters because my life is a life that is lived for others. From the day I was born into an immigrant family, I knew I could not be selfish. From the day my siblings were diagnosed with mental health issues, I confirmed that my life is no longer my own. When I learned that my mom got married off at the age of eighteen and sacrificed her childhood to give birth to children, I wanted to grow up quickly so she could finally live her life freely. When I witnessed my dad’s health dramatically weaken, I became determined to find a job so he could worry less about feeding the family. I understood all too quickly that I could no longer cry in front of my family.

I do not live my life for myself. I lack passion to do things for myself. Do not misunderstand though, I am happy living for others because it gives me a purpose to keep moving foward. It tells me my life matters.
