  1. This is an exemplary memo! Pedro has made the best possible case for the need of commercial recycling efforts throughout the city. Personally working with small businesses and inviting the Department of Sanitation to inform the merchants association of the neighborhood on recycling regulations and preparation for the enforcements to come, I understood how unaware we all were to the seriousness of this issue. The challenges presented were clear and coincided with the what so many of the small businesses I work with have voiced. The evidence from trusted, public sources and variety of forms, i.e. business surveys, bolstered the arguments presented. As an active stakeholder in the community, I want to ensure that the small businesses of the neighborhood are equipped with accurate information and resources before enforcements lead to potential fines, affecting their businesses. Bridging the gap between the agencies involved and the small businesses throughout the city can lead this proposal into success. Looking forward to hearing more about this topic!

  2. Pedro conveyed the seriousness of the waste management problems facing New York City. He clearly laid out the barriers to efficient recycling that many small businesses around the city face: issues with labeling bins, not having time to train staff in proper recycling techniques, and the widespread lack of urgency. Furthermore, Pedro stressed the importance of complying to BRS’s standards and fulfilling the Mayor’s objective of zero waste being sent to landfills in 2030. While the problems seem straightforward, Pedro did a successful job of making the issue seem urgent and of immediate importance.
