Annotation on paragraph 57 &111

1 Leave a comment on paragraph 1 0 One of the important themes in Mishima’s Patriotism is ritual suicide. In Japan, ritual suicide, also called seppuku, has been a time-honored means of escaping from capture or an irreconcilable conflict. It’s a painful way of dying meant to show the courage and tenacity of a samurai even in the face of defeat. In Japanese culture, such a death can be seen as honorable even admirable. From Mishima’s depiction in paragraph 57, we can understand why the lieutenant commited suicide. The lieutenant considered his suicide as “honorable death”, and it is protection of Righteousness and Divine Power, and it expressed sincerity of his patriotism.

2 Leave a comment on paragraph 2 0      From the perspective of language, Mishima was fond of ornate expressions and used a deliberately artificial style. Frequent use of metaphor and a rich vocabulary is characteristic of his style. This gives his characters a quality that transcends the mundane concerns of the average person. In Mishima’s Patriotism, he combined sexuality and death. From Mishima’s depiction in paragraph 111, it reminds me of the term “simultaneity”. Mishima described the death of the lieutenant, and his masculine beauty at the same time.
