Paragraph 1- Annotation

1 Leave a comment on paragraph 1 0 “Disemboweled himself’- it is also called “sepukku”, a ritual suicide in military ranks. Unlike in western culture it is considered the most honorable form of death.

2 Leave a comment on paragraph 2 0 “Eight matt room” – specious room by Japanese standard. Lieutenant and his wife choose to perform ritual in the biggest room in their house to honor the ritual.

3 Leave a comment on paragraph 3 0 “His wife, Raiko followed him”- symbol of a good wife who follows her husband during good and bad times. Their death symbolizes their wows “’till death do us a part”.

4 Leave a comment on paragraph 4 1 “The day which, for a soldier’s wife, had to come, has come. . . .”-Reiko, lieutenant’s wife feels a moral obligation to follows her husband wishes. She is aware that ‘sepukku’ must happen, and that there is no way out of it.

5 Leave a comment on paragraph 5 0 This ritual brings them  purification, and also a peace of mind. They want people to remember them in good spirit as being rightful.
