Chapter 7: The Changing Worker

This Chapter starter out talking about a guy by the name Tony O’Driscoll. The author first describes him as a 300 pound African American, then jumps to saying that he could be a paraplegic veteran in an office environment after Iraq or a middle manager from Ohio negiotiating a complex transaction with a team in Mumbai. This had caught my attention because I was interested in how the author had first perceived him as being a 300 pound African American to a middle manager from Ohio. As I kept reading I understood that the author was trying to explain the thought of having a “second life” or also known as an avatar.

An avatar is a character we make in a drama we shape with other avatars we encounter as described by the author. This means that we could perceive the second life of as anything we would want it to be. If I had an avatar I would perceive it as a girl the opposite of being me. I would have my avatar as a girl with no flaws in life which is impossible in reality.

Free choice:”Goodbye cubical”

Okay so today our free choice blog is due I did not know what to really talk about. So I started looking at others blogs to see if some inspiration. I didn’t work; well I looked at Amy Zeng blog and spoke about basically our working environment. In class we also had a discussion on how our working environment will be. On Thursday my dad was naturalized as US citizen the ceremony was very nice, but the fact that I had to wait in a cafeteria for about four hours without my phone it was hell. Next to me was a lady with a newborn and we started talking. She ended being a person with a job from home.

To me it had to be the most interesting thing ever! I never actually meet face to face someone who worked from home. I thought to myself let interviewing begin!  I asked her many questions, but she made it seem as if it was just as if she was in a cubical she had a babysitter and while she was working she did not pay much mind to the baby. Her meetings were held through the webcam. The image I was setting up was just like a cubical, something that I do not want to experience. I can not wait till I work in the hospital environment so much running around, I know I will not be stuck in one place.

Free Choice: Chapter 7

The beginning of Chapter 7 discusses idea of avatar. People are able to chose any avatar that they like to represent themselves, and no matter what they chose, it would somehow represent who they are, even if it doesn’t look like them. The funny thing about these avatar is that, like in a real life work environment, people base their judgement on how your character look. Tony created an avatar as a overweight African American woman named Lawanda. Through Lawanda, Tony was able to see the unfair of being ignored by the other coworker because of how she looked. The unfairness is no different in work environment and virtual work environment.
The virtual world is a place for people to create a new self. They have the ability to control how they are made. They are able to pay God in their own computer desk. The virtual world allows anything to be possible. The work environment can be brought into the virtual world. A person could manage to make themselves heard because of the identity they are able to hide.

Helping One Another

I think Lego is a great nickname for anyone who can bring a team together and help it work better as a whole. I never saw Shane Battier play in college, but I see him as a great defensive player. Anyway, working together and helping one another out is usually more efficient than working by yourself. Some things, such as a basketball game, just can not be controlled by one player. It is a team game and a lot of other activities and work are similar. You have to know how and when people can work best together — that is the key.
Many teachers do not prefer Wikipedia because anyone with an account can edit the information and not everyone is reliable and trustworthy. However, overall, many of our questions can be answered on that website with the help of people all over the world. I just can not imagine the day many world problems or ideas are public and everyone can contribute insights on somethung like Wikipedia. That will be crazy!

Chapter 7: “The Changing Worker” / office jobs

Our classroom discussion on our ideal workplace has got me to think that everyone has a very unique way of their work environments and what is most suitable for them. The most suitable workplace environment that I have discussed would be working as a open office member. I want to be able to travel around and to meet new people to work on projects. I dislike experiencing the feeling of being trapped in a boxed-like cubicle.Being able to travel around and yet representing your own company is better than staring at extensive amount of papers everyday.

In the beginning of chapter 7, Tony O’Driscoll, an African American, who knows that once people have caught themselves in a unproductive pattern, it is much easier to help them find ways to break that pattern and find a better one. He then gave an example of a women names Lawanda who is the head of a human resources department in a midsize corporation. As Lawanda enters the room for a session, she is automatically seen as being invisible. Even though, she sees everyone being acquainted among themselves, she discovers the real reason to the ignorance. The reasons were, body size, gender and cultural background. During her research, she has found out that being overweight in business is how it lowers your chance of being hired or promoted. Women executives are paid less, promoted less and given less credits compared to man executives and being African American are 50% less likely to be contacted for a job interview. (210) Workplaces are a place where you are able to develop as a person and discover new talents in which you never knew you had before. Workplaces are not meant to be a place where there must be perfection or a place in which they are told to hire specific people of one kind. I was surprised to see how a workplace could have that type of environment where everyone who was hired in that office had to be slim or non African American. I could imagine how a person would feel if they were put in a position where everyone was the same but yourself.

Classrooms and office spaces

A cubicle to some people is a little home away from home. That is what I see in a classroom, a home away from home. But, as long as  I breathe, I will not be confined to a cubicle when I start working in business…..hopefully. But for now, I should worry on classroom spaces. I was never a fan of big classrooms especially during high school. I tried to avoid the 40+ students classes and with a lot of luck I succeeded. But Baruch managed to change that.

My first semester of Baruch put me in three classes with 110+ student. Reluctant at first I, however, grew accustomed to the large classroom environment. I eventually began to dislike small classrooms as each day passes by. The second semester rolls in and I was given 4 classes out of five  in which the size is pretty small. Now I’m still trying to readjust to the small classrooms while asking myself which is better: small or big classrooms? That question then branches off to this question: would I rather work in a small working environment or would I rather work in a large working environment.

I know where I’m not going. Good bye cubicle.

I just finished reading Chapter 7 of Now You See It, and I must say that this chapter has been my favorite so far. I’m really intrigued by the idea of crowd sourcing and mass collaboration, and Davidson’s account of visiting Wikipedia’s offices made me wonder why group collaboration doesn’t play a bigger role in modern society. If a small team of only 35 people can manage and produce a valuable research site like Wikipedia, then why aren’t others collaborating on a larger scale to find the solutions to our world’s most pressing problems, like trying to put an end to all the poverty and hunger that exists? Why are great minds collaborating on stupid things like FarmVille instead of tackling social issues and all the injustices in the world?
I was watching the news the other night, and they had a story about this pretty cool website called Quirky.com, which prides itself on helping people bring their product ideas to market via group collaboration and crowd sourcing. Basically, if someone has an idea for a new product, they can go to Quirky.com and submit it to the Quirky community. Members of the community are known as “influencers” and if they like the new product idea, the influencers will do further market research and maybe even create a prototype. If a person’s idea is well-received, Quirky will even pay to have their product mass-produced and help the inventor sell it in national stores like Toys R Us or Walgreens. Quirky has been wildly successful because of it’s collaborative aspect, and it’s just yet another example of why I think crowd sourcing and mass collaboration need to play a bigger role in society. Doing something like developing an invention/product takes a ton of money and know-how, yet thanks to Quirky’s mass collaboration, it has become a rather easy process.
I think crowd sourcing is a fantastic way to make the world a better place, and I was trying to think of some other aspects of life where implementing this strategy would be beneficial. I decided that crowd sourcing could improve just about every aspect of life, from raising children to investing to teachers grading papers in school. If crowd sourcing has so many benefits, then why isn’t it more popular?

I remember last time I mailed a letter was six years ago. Even though there was email at that time already, I still went to post office and mailed letters to my friends. Then, I had to wait for their reply and the whole process could take more than two weeks. However, I have never done that since then because I am able to know how they have been recently and talk to them on Facebook. Even if I am not at home and I am not on my computer, I still have my phone that has the Facebook app and some other instant messenger app, which allow me to communicate with my friends anytime I want. I do not have to worry about if the message is lost and I can get their response in one day.

We can see how technology changes our daily lives in these few years. It also changes our working environment. Before, if people wanted to do business with other people in another country, they had to go to that country in person and talk to them face-to-face. The flight might already take up one day. However, in recent years, people can just hold an online conference and communicate online. That can save a lot of time and money. Since the world is changing so fast because of the technology, I really wonder how the world and the working environment will look like after we finish college and when we start working.

Free choice- George Carlin

So as of a few days ago I started watching videos of George Carlin. Kind of late, I know, considering that he died in 2008. But anyway, he’s an American comedian, satirist, and GENIUS!! He talks about politics, Americans in general, human nature. He’s a comedian and he’s smart, hard to find. I just thought I woul d write about him because his life is interesting and, gave me a lot to think about. He dropped out of school in the 9th grade which is even more surprising.

I guess it made me realize that you don’t have to go to college and graduate with a 4.0 to be successful and know how to use your brain, Then again he might just be an exception.

My theater proffesor who is pretty famous, and owns a theater told me he never tok a theater class. Thats also surprising too. Makes me question college in general.

So I have decided. I’M DROPPING OUT!!!!!!

Well maybe not, I don’t have much of a back up plan.

I read the article of Blogs vs. Term Papers from course site yesterday. I thought it’s a pretty interesting and thought-provoking piece worth of our attention. Bascially, Matt Richtel claims that we should balance the importance between blog writing and term paper writing. Furthermore, he indicates that whatever content students posted on their blogs are more naturalistic and creative than whatever they wrote in their term papers. We can see this evidence from the research of Professor Lunsford, ‘Students…they feel as if they’re actually producing something personally rewarding and valuable, whereas when they write a term paper, they feel as if they do so only to produce a grade.’ I agree with those students because blog is a place where most people feel comfortable and therefore, they are more willing to devote their time writing entries on blogs. When I was blogging, I felt I’m highly engaged with no rigidity or any boredom. On the contrary, I felt I was just following the class syllabus and writing for the final grade when I was writing a term paper. In other words, writing of term paper gives me a feeling of we’re writing to meet requirements rather than writing to express our own opinions.

In terms of solution to this dilemma, I will say I quite approve of what Professor Lunsford suggests- that teachers can take both. Encompassing both blogs and term papers into classroom is a good idea. My suggestion for professors is to have students post their entries onto blogs twice a week and have them learn real life-related essays such as what Professor Davison used to teach: cover letters, business letters, thank you letters, career goals etc. A mere end-of-grade term paper is only a standardization to judge what grade a student deserves. It won’t suffice in preparing students for the future.
