TEENAGER

In McLuhan “The Medium is the Massage”, he explains how childhood was an invention of the 17th century. I took a class last semester on teenager rebellion and how the “teenager” is an invention of the 19th century. I find this very interesting because if both childhood and “teenagers” are the inventions we created what was it like to grow up during the 16th century. In the past children had to adjust to a harder life and start working at a young age. In today’s era, we have “teenagers” that are still 25 and living with their parents. Parental protection has extended in our world, we tend to care more about out offsprings now than we did in the past. It seems that now we have more time to grow up than we did in the past, we have the time to have a childhood and after that, we have time to develop our personalities and our interest and decided if we work or go to college depending on the availability that we have. We can take an extra step to look towards our futures and make sure we are not rushing into anything. I think the invention of the teenager was the most brilliant invention the human race ever had. Since now we can take a step back and learn what we are interested in and follow jobs that are going to be meant for us. I also believe this is the main reason humans are developing so fast now. Our slowing down on going into the workforce makes us aware of the decision we are making. It makes us smarter and makes our input stronger and more valuable.
