Literacy in the United States
If you are reading this, you may not understand the problem that a fifth of the adult population is currently facing in the United States. That’s right! About 20% of the population cannot read and this can pose devastating consequences on not only themselves, but also on their children. In fact, this translates to a cycle of illiteracy through generations as adults who are unable to read most likely do not have a high school diploma. Lack of a formal education and the inability to read can limit can individual’s ability to attain important information, finding adequate jobs, receiving proper income, etc. This can lead to a higher chance of living in poverty which can impact the lives of the children who live under illiterate parents. These children are more or likely to encounter the same problems due to their unpleasant upbringing as kids live up to the expectations of their residing areas. Also, lower income families do not have the funding to provide the resources to help their child excel in their education. Hence, children from lower income families have a greater chance of not being able to read. As this cycle carries on from generation from generation, it can have negative consequences on society and the individual. Those who are illiterate are more likely to get involved in illegal activities and pass on these behaviors. This can stop now! The major reasons why many adults do not take their time in learning how to read can be due to the time constraints, difficulties, frustration and lack of support. However, gaining literacy skills is a journey that will take time. Yes, there will be many obstacles along the way which will set you back throughout the journey. What you have to remember is you will find beauty in every one of these setbacks as it will shape who you are and what your true purpose is. The end result will change your perception about the world and about yourself. Knowledge is the greatest power which can be passed to your loved ones as well.
