Persuasive Appeals for In-Class Reflection:
The ethos for this reflection is by talking about my experiences with an English class at Rutgers and comparing them with my current class at Baruch in order to assess which class is more enjoyable. This aspect of my reflection can count as an ethos due to my credibility from taking English classes at both colleges. Hence, my experiences help bolster my credibility on this topic.
The pathos for this reflection can be about how I described my current English class. I talked about how this class helped me realize that there was much more to learn than just writing papers. There was some form of emotions expressed when I talked about how my first experience allowed me to be more comfortable with my peers and with my professors which can help me become more confident to participate in the future. I showed excitement and relief when I learned how this class changed my perception on English.
The logos for this reflection is how I used factual evidence in order to represent this new perception. Classes should be about learning how to communicate with others and working with them to enhance one’s learning experience. There should also be some uniqueness to it such as using blog posts and virtually communicating with peers rather than traditional assignments. As a result, the common perception of college classes and my experiences with both classes provides logical evidence on how English 2150 stands out.
Toulmin Method:
My claim on this current English class is how it stood out among other classes I have taken throughout my academic career. The class introduced new and unique ways of learning how to write by not only offering different methods of writing, but also allowing us to apply them and share certain experiences. English 2150 also stood out in terms of allowing the us to communicate and learn about each other initially, therefore allowing us to be more comfortable in sharing our thoughts. As a matter of fact, this class is based on working together as a group directly and virtually. English 2150 introduced a unique way of learning as it set us apart from traditional methods of just writing long papers and handing them in to professors. My English classes at high school and my first writing class at Rutgers was mostly based around writing papers on answering prompts and figuring out our own methods to writing a clear and concise paper. However, English 2150 introduced a variety of strategies including the toulmin method which has helped me understand the texts and enhance my writing skills.
Reflection:
These methods have definitely helped me analyze and improve my own writings as they have helped me understand my work in a deeper context. I learned how each sentence in my writing meant something which it helped me organize my current writing in a clearer manner. Through the toulmin method, I learned how I should approach my introductory sentence and build off of it in a step by step process which helped my writing become more understandable. From learning and applying the persuasive appeal to practice, I learned about the significance of applying them to all form writing as well as spotting them in any pieces of work. The persuasive appeals render a critical meaning as they combine all aspects of expressions such as emotion, credibility and logic to catch an audience’s attention. Hence, although these methods were difficult to understand and apply initially, with enough practice I learned how I can bring a deeper and clearer meaning into my writings.
