Fallacy Report

A fallacy is a term used to describe “false reasoning” or creating erroneous statements when reasoning in an argument or persuading the audience to refrain from or to continue doing something. Transitioning my life from growing up in Long Island to moving to the city for college helped me gain more awareness on this term as I saw these kinds of advertising almost everywhere I went. For example, there is a pizzeria right near my dorm which stated that it had the best pizza in Harlem. There was an other pizzeria right around the block that stated that it had the “best pizza on the block since 1988.” These were mainly advertisements which contained many forms of fallacies such as “Appeal to tradition” in order to achieve a specific goal. We even watch it on commercials as company’s try to use famous celebrity’s to advertise the benefits of their product. This example can be showed in Sprite commercials as even though it is a sugary and unhealthy drink. It uses Lebron James who states that it is his “go to” in almost all commercials which can convince people to overlook the unhealthy aspect just because they think a famous athlete uses it. Even though it is highly unlikely that he constantly drinks it, his appearances on these advertisements make Sprite more appealing. Fallacies are all around us regardless where we are as they come from many different aspects.
