Every presidential election we hear the word abortion. Either it be to ban abortion or to make it less strict, everyone has their own opinions and so do the liberals and conservatives. We know the conservatives are against abortions and the liberals are all for it. Being a female and having to think about this in my future, I sway towards the conservative side because a life is a life even when it just in the womb. As we see in these two articles, “Amid a shifting legal landscape on abortion, both parties seek political advantage,” by the Washington Post, and “Supreme Court blocks Louisiana abortion law as John Roberts joins liberal justices in 5-4 ruling,” by NBC News, show to the two viewpoints when it comes to abortion. Pete Williams from NBC News says that, “The U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday blocked Louisiana from enforcing a law that women’s groups said would leave only a single doctor legally allowed to perform abortions in the state.” This shows how the conservatives like BrettKavanaugh, Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, and Neil Gorsuch all voted to limit Louisiana to have only one abortion clinic. The people of Louisiana have three clinics left and are doing everything to keep them but according to Williams it is not the most “correct” process. As it states, “supporters of abortion rights have fought “against every common-sense health standard. This is just another example of the extreme lengths the abortion industry pursues to protect abortion-on-demand.” The liberals will go to all lengths to do what they need even it is inhumane. On the other side we see the liberal point of view Juliet Eilperin and Michael Scherer of the Washington post. As we seen in this article the liberals are afraid of the new member of Supreme Court Brett Kavanaugh. “Last week, Democrats took aim at moderate Republicans in the Senate who voted to confirm Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh, who is seen as a potential threat to the landmark Roe v. Wade ruling that established a right to abortion in 1973.” We see how they are very worried because after the scandal that was created with Brett, the Supreme court ruled towards in favor of him, and would probably rule in a conservative view for most things including abortion. They are also worried of people switching sides and are reacting to this by attacking the republicans. In the article it states, “Last week, Kavanaugh voted to permit a restrictive Louisiana law to take effect, though the court majority blocked its implementation. Liberals quickly used the ruling to attack Republican Sen. Susan Collins of Maine, a supporter of abortion rights who voted to confirm Kavanaugh last fall.” The liberals are reacting in ways that are pushing people away from them in all categories especially when it comes to abortion. As we see the conservatives are pushing their laws in ways that are moral and the liberals are pushing them in the ways that seem inhumane and just straight out crazy.
Oh wow, yet another Response 3 about abortion, and I think you and Anny used the same issue regarding the Louisiana law being overturned. I agree completely about abortion being such a highly contested issue and I agree with many points you make. I do not really understand the issue going on in Louisiana, however, I do think it is absurd for the state to have one doctor who can perform abortions for the entirety of the population, that would make them a target for extremist in such a red state. I feel like both sides however are not correct in the manner they address this issue and all issues and that is the root of the polarization problem in America today.
Hi Rita, you make a very strong argument and I see your reasoning, but I disagree with how the liberals are being antagonized. Conservatives believe that if a woman is pregnant even in the first trimester, that she is required to give birth to the baby, regardless if the pregnancy is fatal for the mother or child. Otherwise, I agree that no baby should be aborted unless it is under difficult conditions.
I like the claims you make about abortions in your response. I agree with everything you said especially about how the only way a baby should be aborted is if the pregnancy is fatal to the baby from the start. I find it outrageous that Louisiana only has one doctor to perform abortions and that makes it harder for a lot of the people living there who are contemplating about having an abortion.
This was a very good response. I agree that this is a controversial topic and I am very impartial when it comes to this debate. I agree with a restriction on abortion since I do not believe in slaughtering fully developed children but only in the 3rd trimester when the baby’s disabilities can be detected and threats the the mothers health can also be detected. Before that, it should be up to the parents discretion to figure it out.
Hey Rita,
Haha, we did the same topic. But we take different stances on the same issue. I believe that the liberals in this case are right, that women should have the choice to have an abortion or not. Yes, life should be valued but getting an abortion isn’t necessarily not valuing life, it’s a choice that people in attempt to better their lives. If parents aren’t ready for a child or no where in a situation to have a kid, they shouldn’t be forced into having it, everyone should have a choice in their own lives, people deserve that freedom. In my response, I tried to not criticize the conservative side because I wanted to be objective in my stance, if you even can be in this kind of topic. I do see your reasoning but I would like to think that freedom to get an abortion getting taken away would be the similar as to freedom of religion getting taken away. Back then everyone was forced to be a protestant and if was anything else would be criticized, people deserve a choice because it’s their life and none of our business.
