Racism and Sports Public Relations

“Orioles’ gesture showed respect for totality of Baltimore” is an article written by Howard Bryant for ESPN a publication covering news for the major sports. The article comes within six months of protests over incidents of police brutality in Fergusson, Missouri and Staten Island, New York. Bryant presents a polarized view of race relations within the United States in the article. The article posits lines are being drawn and positions are being taken in response to police brutality, by not opening the game to public attendance the Baltimore Orioles were able to remain neutral. The article is of interest to individuals interested in how businesses balance public relations when there are competing views within society. The article connects the relationship between sports, police brutality, racism, and the responses by sports organizations and the fans of sports. This article would be useful for providing evidence for the claim that there is a connection between sports and society. The article also provides evidence that the relationship between sports and society is captured through the media.
