Dealing with Graduation Anxiety

Graduating has always been bittersweet for me. College graduation marks the official end of my student life (for now), something that has been an integral part of my identity for so many years. With college having gone by so fast, it is easy as a senior to feel anxiety and stress about ending this pivotal chapter while also balancing the celebration and happiness.

The most important thing to keep in mind is that you are not alone! Many grads are feeling exactly as you are, which just goes to show this is not uncommon or unheard of. Take the time to soak in your final days of undergrad life, spend time with friends and family, and celebrate your success! You’ve made it so far and deserve to be celebrated.

The one question everyone seems to ask is “What is the plan after grad?” This can be scary, anxiety inducing, and confusing. Being surrounded by grads who already have full-time offers and internships lined up can make it even more daunting. This, however, is not the time for self-doubt if you do not have a solid plan after. You can take a break to find what is right for you, whether it be grad school, an internship, switching a field, or simply traveling while you try to figure out your passions.

You still have access to Handshake, and I recommend reaching out to Starr to add a personal email to your account as well to ensure you are up to date with openings. Remember to update your resume and have it uploaded on there as well, ready to go. As a fresh grad, this is a great time to utilize networking skills and connect with individuals on LinkedIn, set up coffee chats and informational interviews, as many people are willing to speak to and help those entering the workforce. Make sure to keep in touch with previous supervisors and professors, as well as like-minded classmates as you move on, as they can be helpful and supportive in so many ways.

Additionally, attend events, including alumni events in future months, to connect with a wider range of individuals. As the weather is warming up there are many more interactive and educational opportunities happening around the city, so take advantage of what’s around you to broaden your horizons! Opportunity is everywhere, the key is to put yourself out there and go get it. You have much to offer. And as graduates, we still have full access to Starr services for up to six months after graduation, so be sure to use those services for help whenever you need.

It has been a pleasure to be writing for the Peer Tips Column for the past four semesters, but now it is time for me to say goodbye as I officially graduate! Congratulations class of 2025! May we all achieve our big, bright dreams.

Best of luck,
