Journal #15

“Politics and the English Language” by George Orwell has been an interesting piece to examine over the past couple classes. We discovered that all writing is metaphors and the use of dying metaphors is unnecessary. Throughout the piece, we learn what should not be used throughout writing. Although metaphors can be beautiful, they should not be over used.

Another topic pointed out throughout the piece was that the use of modern language does not always evoke the same response. When reading the short passage from “Ecclesiastes”, one could understand exactly what the writer was trying to provoke in the reader. When reading the modern version of the piece, I personally struggled with interpreting the meaning. The use of the “big words” only led to confusion. It made everyone have to take an extra couple minutes to figure out exactly what the words meant and what the author was trying to say.

Orwell concluded that writing will always be an issue. The way things are worded and what the author means will always be different. What one says in their mind will have a difficult time being translated into words. Although our writing will always be an issue, this does not mean that we should continue to not work on improving out writing.
