Journal #19 Personal Entry #11

“The Lottery” was an interesting read because of the plot twist at the end. Well it wasn’t exactly a twist because there were small hints throughout the story. One thought I had was the significance of the condition the black box was in. It was a tradition for the town to choose someone every year to stone, but they did not care for the core instrument needed to choose the victim. Also, why was the box black, was it to signify the darkness and selfishness within every human being or to cover the poor condition it was in.

Another thought I had was why was Mr. Summers the one to conduct the lottery. It was explained that he had the time and energy to devote to the towns activities, but surely he could not have been the only one. I think there is a deeper connection between Shirley Jackson choosing the name Summers and having the lottery take place on June 27th, which is in the Summer time. Mr. Summers also had no immediate family so his chance of getting chosen for the lottery was lower.

It was also interesting to note that only men physically drew from the box unless the men in the family were not physically able to. An exception was Mrs. Dunbar had to draw despite having a son because he was not sixteen yet. Why was there such an emphasis placed on males drawing with an age requirement. Yet, Mrs. Hutchinson was the one to be stoned despite it being Mr. Hutchinson who drew the lot. Perhaps Shirley Jackson was alluding to the patriarchal society of the world.

  1. I think your 3rd point is very interesting. Although Mr. Hutchinson was the person who chose the paper; however, Mrs. Hutchinson had to endure the consequence. I agree with you that it implied patriarchal society at that time.
