Journal #24

I realized in Sontag’s “Regarding the Pain of Others,” she tends to give her audience a lot of questions in the text whether they’re rhetoric or not. This style of writing guides her audience towards the direction she wants as she follows up her questions with an answer. She tends to set a scenario for the reader and guides her audience through her questions and response. This is effective because she becomes the dominant voice and takes control of her essay.

Another thing I realized in her essay is her use of quotes from news articles, magazines, and etc. She gives her reader outside perspective on a gruesome photograph or film that depicts death or war. By doing so, she shows her audience what humans tend to do when they see such gruesome/horrific photos.

Lastly, her tone of the voice in her essay is very dominant. Although her essay is about the depiction of gruesome/horrific photos, she does not show any sympathy to how people react to such photos. In her essay, I felt a dominant vibe from Sontag; she took control of her essay with the use of interesting word choices.
