To be a digital citizen it means to be a member of the technological world and to use it’s information to to engage with society, politics, etc… However the responsibilities that come along with it may be following the law or simply following others and obeying to unspoken rules. Since the digital world has endless amounts of information it is important to distinguish what is true and what is not. Therefore, it is very important not to release false information that may harm one or any particular groups.
Examples of being a digital citizen is someone utilizing a blog, email, journal, social networking websites, etc… Many people utilize these resources in order to support any particular person or group. On the other hand some people may also utilize these resources in order to bash and bad mouth another.
Personally I have never particularly considered the responsibility of being a digital citizen but after researching it a bit, I figured that I’ve been behaving as a proper digital citizen. On a daily basis I would just utilize these blogs, social networking websites, etc.. for personal knowledge and not falsely accuse anyone of anything. I think it is necessary for every digital citizen to abide to these rules and utilize the digital world for something more useful and better.
I like this post because it brings to light a big issue we have in today’s society and it is cyber bullying. I agree that it is very important to become a digital citizen because we are, in fact, in the 21st century where most things are run by technology. However, we should also be aware of the fact that it can go both ways. So being a digital citizen can be a good thing or a bad thing depending on how one chooses to use this title.
