Theme Exploration: #iownsmyself

What I’ve learned through exploring the theme of free will was that the majority of the posts under this tag were mainly about Huck and his morality. I have noticed that there were only a few posts about Jim. Many posts were about Huck’s actions and dealing with his own inner struggles. I personally think that Jim plays a huge role in this theme because he is an escaped slave. Jim knows what he wants in life and he’ll do anything to get it.

Jim has been living in oppression for the majority of his life since he obviously had no rights as a slave. Even as an escaped slave, he still experiences oppression as the novel progressed. I think we should explore more of Jim’s character under this tag since he holds a great deal of significance under this theme. He is willing to risk his own life in order to gain freedom that he might not even be able to attain. During his journey to the Free States, we can notice that Jim feels less oppressed in a way because he isn’t owned by anyone. As we read about their journey, we can note the types of free will Jim is experiencing as an escaped slave. Also, while exploring this theme, we can also compare Jim’s ideas of freedom and Huck’s ideas on freedom.
