Clonfluence Assignment: #huckcon, #jimlivedthis, #cantpraylie

Chen Fong, Pulkit Kumar, John Kim

A scene that depicts the themes of lying, racism, and religion/devotion is when Huck first decides to turn Jim in (pg. 102).  But when he faces the two bounty hunters, searching for five run-away slaves, Huck has an inner struggle with the influences of society’s laws and his personal morality.  When he is asked if the person on the raft is black or white, Huck “didn’t answer up prompt…I just give up trying” (pg. 102).

We see that Huck was initially determined to turn Jim in, and follow society’s rules, but when faced with society in the two bounty hunters, he changes his mind.  This happens because of his moral devotion to Jim as a friend and not as a run away slave.  He sees Jim as a human being.  Huck is breaking down the racial influences of society and following his own natural morals.
