Rosenwasser’s piece on writing analytically really makes a person rethink their own process of analyzing. He points out a specific method in which one can analyze textual material. Personally, I have a lot of trouble with analysis. Starting with his first point, “Suspend Judgement”. Everyone has difficulties with not judging a person which is why removing this can be very difficult. Judging someone comes instinctively. I never realized how much judgment could affect the way I read and understand a piece.

Another point that I have never considered before is transferring “meanings from your own life onto a subject” which “can lead you to ignore the details of the subject itself” (16). Everyone’s experience have an effect on what they choose to view. I would never have thought that I would ignore something in a piece because I experienced something different. Now that I actually think about it, people tend to block out some things in their lives. They do not focus on what could be the prime issue or matter at hand. They block out what they do not remember or do not want to see. This leads to faulty analysis.

The final point that Rosenwasser brings up that caught my eye was fully registering all of the information contained in a piece of work. I realized that I always skim over things. I try to retain the general gist of something just to get by. If I really must analyze something, I should put more effort into fully understanding the piece. I am not the best at analyzing, so after reading this I will definitely be changing the way I analyze everything.

  1. I think your opinion on relating to a subject is interesting, how it can lead to faulty analysis. I agree on with where you are coming from however if it is their own personal analysis is it faulty? Or just different to your own?
