Journal #9 Personal Entry #5

Prior to utilizing the method of tweeting my thoughts, they would just seem to float away after every chapter. However, reading back on my tweets, I’ve realized that my classmates and I actually have many insightful thoughts throughout the novel. It is quite interesting that the whole point of the journey is to set Jim free, but the story barely shifts onto him. Everyone at the end is back to the start, everything simply circled back except Jim who the novel barely glanced at.

There was also an outstanding hierarchy of morality throughout the novel. Huck is the simplest and lowest on the hierarchy because he always does what he feels right. He also only lies as necessary, either to protect Jim or to gather information along the road. Tom is a bit sneakier and does things as he feels. He seeks a sense of adventure no matter the consequences of those related like Jim. The Duke is blinded by greed and practically has no sense of morality. He utilizes the weakness of the two young distressed girls and scams them of their inheritance.

The state of upbringing someone undergoes greatly influences their reactions and course of actions. If Huck had grown up like Tom, he may have acted more like Tom and would not have made it so far along the river with Jim. Tom who focuses more on the aspect of adventure than the well being of Jim may have left Jim long ago. If Huck had grown up like Buck, he would have been more violent and would have left the two robbers murder the accomplice.
