Reading “Rosenwasser, Writing Analytically” right after writing an essay, it opened my eyes on how differently you can approach writing. Idea’s are meant to grasp the heart of your argument and project reasons for it’s validity. Rosenwasser states 10 moves that hone a writer’s analytical process. Three of those “moves” impacted my revelation on writing analytically.
Rosenwasser suggests the writer to avoid applying judgement when analyzing material. Judgement clouds the analysis of a writer dissection of the material. By removing the emotional judgement, we are able to approach the material raw and use the second move that he suggests; “Define significant parts and how they’re related”. Every piece of information we read relates to it’s respective thesis, but to find information that relates to the thesis in our pieces, requires us to ask how relevant it is. Removing judgement of the material we read, better allow’s to determine it’s relevancy to our thesis.
The last suggestion Rosenwasser suggest that made an impact to my approach is to look for patterns. In every essay, as coherency is key to achieving an easy flow, find the relation in every piece of material we impanelment in to our essay starts by find patterns. Rosenwasser provides with technical jargon such as “look for binary opposition” that weren’t in my rubric while analyzing. These new moves will definitely assist me in analytical process.
I agree we often judge and try to prove our ideas rather than just elaborating and and dissecting the topic. We try and find whats wrong when writing is not really about judging or proving anything at all.
