Journal #12

Thinking back to when I first was informed that we would use Twitter to discuss and explore Huck Finn, I had many mixed feelings about it. One of the feelings I had was of confusion because it wasn’t clear to me how Twitter would mix in with the discussion of Huck Finn. Another feeling I had was that it could be different and maybe better than some of the traditional ways I was use to discussing things in an English class because I never had used Twitter in a classroom setting before. Overall, I wasn’t really sure what to think of what the effectiveness of using Twitter would be in discussing the novel before we started to actually use it.

After using Twitter for the duration of the class that we had so far, some of my views of using it as a tool for discussion have changed. One view that changed is that it actually works; using Twitter I can read many other people’s insights and thoughts on the book, and even realize some things that I wasn’t consciously aware of before someone wrote about it. For example, someone could write about how the weather in a certain scene emphasizes the mood and tone that took place during that scene. Although the person may be wrong, it still is a interesting thought and makes you think. Overall, using Twitter so far was a good experience and it is even revolutionary in the sense that a college professor is using social media as a means of teaching.Maybe this form of teaching will become a more common thing seeing as society is constantly changing, and social media is a big part of today’s society.
