Surviving the Subway in NYC
Daewoong Lee
Today I want to share how to survive in the New York City subway.
“Stand Clear of The Closing Doors Please”
There are 26 lines in New York City, including local and express trains. Pay only $ 2.75 to go anywhere in New York City.
1. Transfer
First, let’s talk about the transfer system. Currently, the MTA allows one transfer. The card must be used within 2 hours of the first use and can only be used for bus-subway and bus-bus transfers.
Please note: Subway-subway transfers are not allowed. If you want to go through the turnstile and enter another subway station within 2 hours after getting off the subway, you cannot use the Metrocard to ride free.
2. App
MTA recently launched an app called MyMTA. You can know the train and bus location and arrival time of the route you want to know in real-time.
It also informs you of the MTA’s many constructions and subway delays, so you can think about alternative routes in advance without having to go to the subway station and check.
3. Metrocard
Metrocard can be refilled in two ways. First, you can buy a commuter pass for unlimited rides, but you can use it within a fixed period. The price is approximately 130 $ for 30 days. You can only ride the unlimited subway and local buses for 30 days.
Please note: Unlimited ride benefits do not apply to Express Bus.
Secondly, there is a $ 2.75 each time you board. Recently, you can board using Apple Pay and Tab Card. Apple Pay and Tabcard rides are only available on the green subway lines and the Express Bus. If you do not have a MetroCard, you will need to purchase one. There is an additional $ 1 charge.
Note: You can pay by credit card only at the machine.
4. People and Rats
Finally, there are many kinds of people on the New York subway. It ranges from homeless, artist to millionaire. It is important to be patient and to have an attitude to understand each other. New York Subway is also home to many New York rats. At some point, everything that was strange at first will be nothing special.
Note: Don’t be surprised if you see rats, and you will need to develop your skills to avoid contact as much as possible.
