Topic: The effect of COVID-19 on the world of soccer.
Question: What effect has the coronavirus had on the English Premier League, both economically and in terms of fan dedication.
Extra Information: Coronavirus had massive effects on the world of football as it shut down leagues around the world and even lead to a few rule changes. Not only that but since the reopening of the leagues and the more recent opening of the new season, many players have had issues with the pandemic protocols in place to keep players safe leading to many key players missing games. Many people felt that the way many soccer organizations dealt with the pandemic was very unfair. For example, the Ballon d’Or was not given out despite there being a clear leader as the best player in the world: Robert Lewandowski, who many fans felt was treated unfairly. With all of this in mind, I would like to delve into the effects the virus had on the leagues financially as well as how it has affected the dedication of fans who Amy be frustrated by all of the changes. To study this, I do not think it would be efficient nor fit the parameters of this assignment if I looked at every major league in the world, so I will instead be looking at the English Premier League alone.
I think you have an interesting topic, but I think it might be a little too narrow. I think with what you mentioned the response may be as straightforward as, the English Premier League lost … amount of dollars. I’m not sure about the fan dedication portion and how much you’ll get out of that. I like your idea, but I am not certain it can reach the 7-8 pages. In case that it doesn’t give you the minimum, you may want to research some other effects covid had on the Premier League.
Hi Adding on to Jose’s comment, this is a very recent and interesting topic, I am curious how the dedication of fans portion can be measured, the financial portion might be easier to measure. Also, since this is a recent topic, it might be difficult to find research sources, but as long as you can find the statistics and research sources I don’t think this is the topic is too narrow.
I also agree with Adrienne. The dedication of fans portion maybe difficult to quantify. I suggest finding statistics about television viewership per game or the amount of euros fans spend on gear such as jerseys. Nonetheless, I think if you made the question “How has the……” instead of “What effects has the….” it makes the question stronger because instead of just listing the effects it drives you to go more in detail.
I think this is a great paper to write. For one, mentioning “Ballon d’Or” and “Robert Lewandowski” (two things I do not know anything about) shows that you have exposure to this topic. I think it will be interesting for you to find quantifiable data. It seems that you are a fan, and you are writing about the impact covid has had on the world of soccer, so you can find data that supports you as a consumer.
I read Jose’s comment and just wanted to add that if you wanted to make it less narrow, you can talk about the world of unprofessional soccer. Kids rely on sports to express themselves and for human interaction. Due to COVID, tournaments have been shut down. You could ask a question in the way that covid has impacted soccer through the youth being inactive and having to find alternatives to playing soccer (maybe talk about e-sports and fifa) and the impact on tournaments and the people that run tournaments and rely on those salaries. You could talk about the politics behind sports. For example, analyze the policies of different states and counties in how they are eligible to play. For example, Florida has opened restrictions to organized sports. The governor takes no responsibility and tells the cities it is up to them to make decisions on if they want to have tournaments.
Back to your topic, you could talk about the difference in financial aid for sports with covid and without. For example, without covid, they received money for game tickets, food and drinks, and parking at the stadiums.
