Gender

I’ve been interested in the concept of gender, with nowadays the concept of gender is changing and expanding to be more inclusive for all kinds of people. My research question is what is gender, and whether it is a biological concept or a social one. I plan on researching about the debate of whether gender is biological or cultural. I’m still unsure about this topic if it’s something I want to write a research paper on.

  1. I’d say “whether gender is a biological concept or a social one” is a better question than what is gender. I’d also say you should explain what is gender and the different definitions of them in your paper to support the main question. If this research question is something you’re genuinely interested in and think you can write a lot about, then I say go for it.

  2. Although you could discuss the 60+ genders individuals associate themselves with, I feel like there’s not that much to discuss for simple concepts of gender.

  3. i feel like analyzing whether gender is social or biological can give you a bit to discuss and dive into. however, “what is gender” seems as if it may not give 7/8 pages to discuss

  4. Hi Jonathan, as some have pointed out, “gender” is much too broad at this point, but touching on gender as a social construct could be very interesting. Gender IS a social construct–sex is biological, gender is not. Knowing this, maybe your research question could look into something like “what are the ways we are taught to perform gender roles from childhood on?” or “how has the internet advanced our cultural knowledge of gender?” Just spitballing.
