Cultural Appropriation of Japanese Culture

Question: How has the Occident appropriation of Japanese culture affect the Japanese perception of their own traditions?

In the globalized society we live in, there’s an enormous trade of merchandise and currency, but not only that. There’s also an accountable type of trade between countries- the trade of ideas and cultures. In the last 30 years, there has been a surge of popularity in the western countries regarding a style of animation from Japan, popularly known as “anime”. The increasing demand in the western hemisphere led to changes in the industry and the way the content is produced, leading to a loss in the traditional values of Japan that should be included in the art, making a more “westernized” version of anime that relates less and less to Japan’s traditions and values.

  1. Even though I’m not knowledgable about Anime or Japanese Culture, I find your research question very interesting. The basis of your question is also thought-provoking because I would have never thought that a Western view on another country’s culture/tradition would have caused that nation to rethink some of its own ways just to keep feeding into our western ideals and wants.

  2. Your research question sounds nice, the options are debatable and there’s no straight answer to it, and it goes into depth for a larger view of the situation.

  3. I think this is a super interesting topic to look into because you can go in depth and analyze topics like how things lose value overtime due to having it exposed to too many people and how that affects the origin of where that artifact came from. You can even talk about this on a global scale and involves peoples’ interactions, politics, trade and derive new meaning into this paper.
