About the position:
The Writing Center is a free support service where students can meet one-to-one with a professional writing consultant to ask questions, get feedback, and work collaboratively on their academic, professional, and creative writing. The Front Desk Attendant helps ensure the smooth functioning of our Writing Center services by communicating with students, scheduling appointments, and supporting writing consultants and administrative staff in their daily work.
As a Front Desk Attendant, you will:
- Open and close the Writing Center: Depending on your schedule, you may be scheduled for shifts that take place before or after the full-time workday. During these periods, you‘ll be responsible for making informed decisions and supporting the smooth operation of the Center.
- Communicate with students and faculty: You’ll respond to student and faculty emails, phone calls, and visits and reply to all questions and requests with helpful and accurate information.
- Manage the appointment schedule: You will help schedule, change, and cancel student appointments, initiate new student registrations, and check that both students and consultants have arrived to their appointments.
- Communicate with Writing Center staff: You’ll communicate with writing consultants and administrative staff about any appointment changes, missing forms, or other special circumstances.
- Help maintain the in-person workspace: You’ll keep the Writing Center space organized and flowing by seating students for appointments, assembling workshop packets for consultant use, replenishing printed materials, tidying up, etc.
- Assist with troubleshooting: As the primary liaison between students and writing consultants, you’ll help troubleshoot basic technology and scheduling issues. We will provide training on our scheduling system and any other platforms you may need.
- Other responsibilities as needed, depending on the day and time of your shifts.
In addition to these core responsibilities, we also hope to work with you to develop an individualized project that helps you learn and apply specific skills, such as operations, data analysis, campus outreach, social media development, etc.
Qualifications:
We’re looking for reliable, friendly, assertive, self-motivated, organized, and detail-oriented people to join our front desk staff. Experience in providing excellent customer service—in an office, a restaurant, a retail position, a volunteer role, etc.—is a strong plus.
This position is open to current undergraduate and graduate students at Baruch.
Pay & Hours:
Front Desk pay rates start at $19/hour for undergraduate and $20/hour for graduate students.
Front Desk attendants generally work in shifts of 5 or fewer hours, for a maximum of 20 hours a week. Shifts may be scheduled any time Monday–Thursday, 8:30AM-8PM.
