[Online] Reading and Writing While Bored

Friday, February 16, 2024 , 12:30 pm 1:45 pm EST

One of the most important skills to hone as a student is the ability to pay close attention to your reading and writing for any given college class—practicing skills like close reading, effective note-taking, essay-planning, and more. Yet what do you do if you’re trying to read something and your eyes glaze over—you find yourself rereading the same sentence over and over again or avoiding reading it entirely? What do you do if you don’t want to write an essay—not out of anxiety or perfectionism, but just the desire to do something more interesting with your time?

This workshop examines what makes tasks like these boring, evaluating texts and examining why our attention drifts. Ultimately, we’ll work together to find ways to navigate that boringness, finding excitement and motivation in even the supposed dullest of things.
