Koutsoudis Giftbag Analysis

For my overall design approach for my bag, I wanted to make sure that my message was understandable and powerful. In order to do this, I had to make sure that I had to do something visually so that the message grabs the attention of my audience. I choose to use medicine bottles for many reasons. The first reason was because I found a graphic during my research process of this project. My classmates thought that the graphic was interesting, so I decided to recreate the medicine bottles on Illustrator. I spread my message throughout the bag where typically the labels are found so that it worked and flowed correctly. Also, these medicine bottles represent how many bottles of medications a patient with Parkinson’s disease really goes through in a given year.

For my tag and logo design, I wanted to do that was unique and different. I was inspired by a YouTube video on how to create word art and I learned how to use this technique on illustrator. It was a long process, but at the end it would give my audience some words that are associated with the disease. For the inside of the bag, I decided to use strips of paper with known facts of Parkinson’s disease on them. I was inspired to do this from multiple examples that we saw in class.

For the typeface, I decided to use Helvetica Neue Medium. I choose this typeface because of its simplicity and easy to read. This typeface also does not take away from the design. Overall Helvetica is a simple typeface that is not to complicate and doesn’t take away from the full design elements

Overall this project has taught me many things. The first thing that it taught me is how to create a design that flows throughout, as opposed to a design that doesn’t flow. For me, it took me many times to do this, but it was a learning experience. Another concept that I learned from this project is how to design specifically for a target audience and your organization. It allowed me to understand designing in a more problem-solving manner as well.

Invitation

Harriet Koutsoudis

Design Approach:

For my design, I tried to keep it very simple and clean. When I was coming up with folds ideas, I thought that having uneven folds would be an interesting way to present an invitation. By having uneven folds, it gives the audience a sneak peak of what the rest of the invitation in tells. This was the main reason why I decided to place the images on the front of the invitation. To me, it gives the viewer excitement and leaves them wanting to see what is on the inside of the invitation. Also it gives the audience a correlation between the quote and a visual representation through images. I chose to use a serif font because I thought that it would correlate with the environment of the exhibit. To me serif fonts have a more sophisticated look and looks more aged as apposed to a modern looking text such as Helvetica.

Paper Choice:

If I were able to print my invitation on my own paper choice, it would have been Muscletone Construction pure white 18pt-140c-thick. I chose a pure white paper because it would give my images and text a crisper look to them. Another reason why I chose this type of paper was because of its weight and how it felt. I liked how it felt and by having a thicker paper, it gives it a more sophisticated look and feel like a true invitation.

Text Used:

Baskerville, Baskerville Italized, Baskerville Semi-Bold, Baskerville Regular

What I learned:

One major thing that I learned from doing this project was how unreliable the printer can be and how to work with it. Every time that I went to print out my project, my fold would always be off and to me, it made my text to look crocked. I know now that we do not have any say on how the printer prints, such as coloring in the pictures and in text. For example when I printed a test run to my finial final project the quote coloring looked fine, but when I went to staples to get it printed it looked much more lighter. This was probably due to the different type of paper that was used and the ink. Overall this project taught me how understand that it is out of our hands and that we do not have control into it.

Postcard Analysis

Harriet Koutsoudis

When thinking about designs for each version of the postcards, my main goal was to create a design that was simplistic. Something that will grab the attention of the audience, but something that isn’t overdone. With my one-color postcard, I placed the image at the bleed line. This allowed my image to be cut off and it didn’t t show the whole image. To me, this was an interesting way to present my postcard without going overboard. For the text, I used Helvetica, a text that is very straightforward and not too complex.

With my two-color design, I tried to approach this design in a different way. I was trying to come up with different ways in which I can crop my image, so I decided to use the hexagon shape placer. I thought that this was an interesting way to use the cropping technique, because it made it look like puzzle pieces. Even though it was cropped, the audience was still able to see the original image. To correlate with the design, I decided to use a much more smaller text and applied a lighter tint because I felt that there was already to much design work present that if I did use a stronger text, then it would have been to chaotic.

For my last design, I tried to approach my design similarly like my other two designs. For this design, I decided to use the color black because I thought it made my image stand out more. I chose this design because; to me it almost resembles placing a photograph in a nice frame. By adding the rectangles at each corner, it add more depth to picture and make it more unique. I also used the font Helvetica because it was very simple and it did not overdue the rest of the image and design.

Overall, this project has allowed me to have a better understanding of the coloring process when it comes to printing and design. I’ve learned how these techniques are essential to working in the design field and how it is so crucial to now these types of procedures.
