Mai Matsumoto: Gift Bag Analysis

The theme for my gift bag is to have a donation for the dogs and cats that will kill in the shelter. Every day, more than 9,000 healthy and treatable dogs and cats are killed in America’s shelters. But every day, there’s something all of us can do to help save those animals. To buy this bag is to help to end the killing of the dogs and the cats that are killed in America’s animal shelters every day.

For my gift bag, I choose the organization that called “Save Them All Best Friends”. This organization is to have a donation and help the cats and dogs that are in the shelters. Because of the shelters are for cats and dogs, I used silhouette of cat and dog. And I tried to make them crying because they want help. I put the footmarks, fish and bone for underline. I want to emphasize fish for cat and bones for dog. Because of it, I used both for gift tag too. And because of the dogs and cats are need help, I put “HELP US” on both side of bag. For the inside and the string, because of my design of bag is almost black and white, I used white tissue and black string. And for my bag, I used color black, dark blue, and light blue.

From the experiment of to make this gift bag, I learned it is better for symmetry on opposite side of gift bag. For my bag, first I put the word “HELP US” only one side. But latest one, I put this word both side. I feel it better than before. And for gift tag, it should be understandable. First, I tried to make it as a bone and put the mark of fish on it. But the fish is too small. I think it was difficult to get that emphasize both cat and dog. So, I changed it and to make bone and fish are equal size.

Invitation

Design Approach: For this assignment, I am most in concentrated on the folding design of invitation card. I tried to be carefully to make the size of where I need folding when I print it out. For the design, I was use  only one quote to see it simple. And for two pictures, I used half are duotone and other half are in grayscale. I tried it as easy to compare grayscale and duotone picture. And I tried the sentences are fit in the place and tried to them to see well. And I used the color as pantone 571C as a duotone and some words.

Typeface: Bodoni Std-BoldItalic and Bodoni Std-Book

Paper: I would like to use vellum 80c/216 gsm in white. I chose it because I thought it fit with this assignment and that one is not very hard to fold it.

What I learned: When I put the sentences or address on the card, I need to be careful about leading. If leading space are too much, it need  more space. But if I change leading space to be smaller, it looks better and there will be more negative space. I think that work to be simple and easy to see.

What I learned:

From this project, I learned how to use photoshop and indesign for 1,2, and 4 color model. Both 1 color model and duotone, we have to make grayscale picture to make them. For 4 color model, almost we can use every color, is stand by CMYK, cyan, magenta, yellow, and black. I also learned about the pantone color, it has more than thousand spots color.

Design Approach:

1 color
For 1 color model, I made more than 10. I want to try many color and many style for it. For them I concentrated on the design, when it is sale at the store what kind of design people feel to want to buy it. I tried use many color and many style and I tried to make them easy to see and read.

2 color
For 2 color model, I tried to make mix color by using the spot which I used for duotone. For this one, I concentrated on the color which I used for picture and mixed color which I made. I used two color, which I chose for duotone, for most of pictures.

4 color
For 4 color model, I only make three. The first one is simply as possible and second one is just use half of picture which I chose. And third one, I used circle frame for the picture, and I tried to change the color of each rose different than original one. For this model I used rose color, like red, pink, purple or other color which like rose normally.
