Week 1: Getting Rolling

Hi everyone,

This week, my focus was largely spent on narrowing down and fine-tuning what I’m going to do as my Independent Study. Originally something much different, I’ve changed my project into creating and producing a brand called Seek Collective. Functioning as a digital platform for artists to network and collaborate, it also serves as a protective entity to those artists. I found a lot of inspiration in Magnum Photos, in how they function as a protector of intellectual property and artists as individual freelancers. I want to create something that had a functional purpose, while also creating the foundation to foster new collaborations across various mediums. In addition to being a digital resource, there will be a bi-annual photo journal that showcases the new collaborations that were born, as well as a general update of what’s going on within the network.

I’m close to handing in my final proposal and getting the approval needed to make it concrete. In terms of the project work, I started the initial research in gathering photo journals and print publications that catch my eye from a design and layout perspective. A couple links to those are below (these have a digital blog, as well as the print resource). I’ve also started reading up more and delving into Magnum Photos — how they work, why they’re successful in what they do, etc. Now I’m going to finish up the proposal and start organizing my thoughts into how Seek will function in the way that I envision, starting with a simple diagram. Next week I hope to have that flow charted out, as well as logos mocked up.
