Week 2 Update
This week, I finalized my proposal and submitted for approval. If all goes well, I’ll register and be set for the semester.
In terms of work, I started by buying the www.seek-collective.com domain and set up the initial website on Squarespace. There are fees involved, so I’m only starting with the basic site until I develop it enough that the needs for the site grow. In addition, I’ve started collecting various photo journals and print publications that I’ve been drawn to. I’m looking through them and marking various elements of design that I like – ways of incorporating advertising, grid choices, typography, etc.
The initial research of the project involves looking for other collectives that exist. I’m interested in what they do that’s different, and how that will affect Seek. I started by setting 3 goals of research:
1- How do they incorporate collaboration?
2- How does being a member benefit the artist?
3- What kind of feedback exists about the chosen collective?
Then, I did a basic search for art collectives available. I found, and read about:
1- Con Artist
2- Fowler Arts Collective
3- Space Studios
3- Salt Fox Art Collectives
I also found an online article published on the Guardian about a few students who began their own collective, which delved into why it is beneficial to the artist and led the way to finding more collectives for my research. In addition to those, I dug in deeper to Magnum Photos, a collective I personally see as the most successful in protecting an artist’s body of work. I found a lot about why they were and are different. Details of the research are available here: Collectives – Research.
Lastly, I started a brief skeleton of Seek that will evolve as I learn more and make more decision on what I want Seek to provide that isn’t already out there.
