This account of walking the streets by Garnette Cadogan is one that I found very interesting for a few reasons. The first being I had an encounter with the police pretty similar to this. It started off the same way I was on my way to school rushing so I could get their early and study for my test but as I was getting ready to swipe into the train the police were waiting right by the turn style and before I knew it they had grabbed my arm and pulled me the side saying they had to do a random routine search. Now let me preface that I have seen this happen multiple times growing up and while some time the cops do randomly search you, There are instances where it is blatantly obvious that the police are just doing it to mess with you or just ruin your day. I have seen it done to guys with priors that police busted and will target them often under the pretense that it is a random search. The police are also very aggressive in these instances most of the time not working with you but working you treating you like an animal. This is mirrored in Garnette’s work when he states “The others got frustrated that I wasn’t answering them fast enough and barked at me. them, digging through my already-emptied pockets, asked if I had any weapons, the question more an accusation.” even though it sounds absurd something like this happens, it does and it is a very common occurrence that people should be aware about. His work really shows the harsh reality of living through the experience and the difficulty of keeping composure just trying to escape the situation your in alive.
