Journal #3

As the first semester is coming to an end, I am beginning to think back at everything that has happened over the past three months – first successes and first failures, first papers and first exams, and of course, first projects. The more I think about it, the more I realize that without all the support from faculty and peers of Baruch Scholars, the semester would just not be the same.

The Community Service Project encouraged us all to grow a little closer together, to get to know each other a little bit better and to learn to work as a team. Not every step was easy, and some required a great level of effort from each member of the team. Just choosing the right cause was a challenge! With everyone being passionate about something, it was hard to settle on a cause each member agreed on. Thankfully, Dariya and Mr. Medina were always there to help us out. They pointed us in the right direction, and exposed us to resources like library databases for performing our organization search.

Needless to say, the Community Project was one of the first projects all of us had to do in college. And while it was not the most difficult task, it taught us the importance of teamwork, and the challenges that come with it. Communicating with every member, and coming to an agreement is oftentimes difficult and requires a tom of compromise and communication. This is something that I feel I will not only take into my future courses, but into my future career as well. Being a team player is essential in today’s environment, and having the ability to lead the team in the right direction, while taking into consideration all the member’s thought and feelings is essential for future success.

Three years seems like an eternity at this point, however I am sure that the time will fly by and the three years will be over before I know it. When it happens I hope to be able to look back at my college career and see a fulfilling past filled with successes, progress and personal growth. I hope to see myself as an evolved persona with a wide range of experiences and an open-minded view of the world. Of course, throughout the whole journey I hope to continue progressing in my career (whatever it will be) and be able to enter the workforce as a full time employee upon graduation.

Importance of Community Service

As Baruch students, and as members of greater community, we ought to give back and support the community that has nurtured and continues to nurture us into the people we are today. Being a part of  Baruch Scholars, further reinforces the need to give back. Given the fact that our involvement and participation in school, as well as outside of school, has helped us earn a full scholarship, makes it obvious that the well-being of our community is essential to our success, as well to the success of others.

Although it may be hard to find time to volunteer, and participate in events that do not directly correlate to our long-run academic or professional success, it is still important to do it. Why, you would ask. The answer is simple. Without this community you would have never been able to get where you are today. Thinking on the broader scale, outside of yourself, it is important to note, that one positive action, can and will lead to a chain of events, that will affect many other people.

One of the ways in which the culture of Baruch Honors encourages such behavior, is by creating a requirement for committing some time for volunteering. Some students may see this as an inconvenience, especially their first year, when the pressure to perform is highest. However, having this requirement, may oftentimes provide students with eye-opening experiences, helping them find a passion, while helping their communities grow and improve. Giving back to the community, is thus a responsibility each and every one of is obliged to, and should hesitate to perform.

Hello everyone!

My name is Maria, and I am a student here, at Baruch College.

I was born in Russia, and moved to the United States when when I was in sixth grade. I see this as one of the most influential events in my life, since it taught me to become open minded and helped me see the cultural differences and various ways of life in two different countries. To this day, I feel like immigrating to the United States, helps me better communicate with people of different races, who come from non-Amercan backgrounds, since I know what it’s like to be new and lost in the country where everybody seems to somehow fit in.

While being in Baruch, I hope to major in accounting and eventually earn a CPA. I am also interested in pursuing a career in marketing, so a marketing minor may be a part of my near future. So far, I am really enjoying the first semester, and look forward to the upcoming years.

In the past, I have participated in a wide range of extracurricular activities, and hope to do the same in Baruch. Some of these activities included school newspaper, student government, United Network of Student Leaders, as well as several Honor Societies.

In my free time I like to cook, especially when it gets colder outside and my apartment doesn’t feel like an oven. I also enjoy staying active througout the year. I love running, and this summer I started competing in running races taking place in NYC. At some point I would like to run a marathon, but of course, that will require a lot of time and training.
