Wow~ I’ve Learned So Much So Far!

Thanks for taking the Art 3041 in Baruch this semester, I’ve grown tons of knowledges about 3D printing. First, and the most essential one, I’ve learned how to use the Sketchup software to do 3D design, and able to actually print my 3D design products for the first time in my life. Second, after visiting the MAD museum, my mind was exploded by lots of the innovative design ideas from the NYC makers, which helped me greatly extend my creative thinking ability. Third, after reading the “Fabricated” text book, I knew many top development in the 3D printing world now, as well as the benefits and drawbacks that it will bring.

The most challenge that I face in this learning process is how to successfully using the Sketchup software. Sorry to say that, but the truth is, Sketchup is not yet as smart as the adobe design softwares. When using it for design, this software is somehow time consuming and has many limitations. For example, it requires using at least three tools to successfully move and turn an object perfectly. Besides, during this process, it can’t move and view the other side of the object at the same time, and it require the designers to frequently switch between different tools. In addition, the 3D words can’t curve. Thus, if you want to engrave your name on the face of a round object, it can’t do that. However, this software is easy for 3D design beginners to use, which is its biggest advantage. 🙂

My strength for this class is my creative thinking ability and my graphic design skills. After listening to the lectures about developing creative solutions, I’ve developed my creativity more. I’ve learned how to figure out the implicit need from explicit circumstances, and how to use empathy to develop effective solutions. In addition, after using Sketchup more and more, I greatly improved my 3D design skills. And these are the most of the unique abilities that I can bring to the group.
