Doughology is Donut Heaven

At Doughology in Lynbrook, NY, donut enthusiasts can create their perfect donut and study the science of donut making all at an affordable price.

Opened in 2016 by retired NYPD detective Chris Stiansen and his wife, Stacey, Doughology is a donut shop like no other. With crazy flavors like Maple Bacon or Churro, the specialty flavored donuts are made to order, some coming with customizable features so the customer gets just what they want.

Doughology’s vanilla cake donuts serve as the base for the specialty donuts, and are a bit heavier than the ones offered by Dunkin’ Donuts or Krispy Creme, but that’s not a bad thing. The weight of these donuts allows them to support several toppings, and the hint of vanilla goes nicely with flavors like Samoa or Cannoli.

Ray Kramer, a carpenter, says it’s a great place to grab a treat on the weekends.

“I like to come in on Saturdays to grab a half dozen and bring them home to my family,” he said, adding “you can’t go wrong with any of their flavors.”

There are sixteen specialty donuts on the menu, with flavors regularly rotating. Don’t want a crazy flavor? No problem–customers can design their own donut as well, choosing from four different glazes and 21 toppings.

Unlike some of the more expensive donut places in Manhattan, Doughology is perfect for those on a budget. Specialty donuts are $2.25 each and regular coffee was only $1.50.

I ordered the Cannoli donut, a Samoa donut and a Cheesecake donut with raspberry topping. The Cheesecake donut is customizable, and the customer can choose one of three fruit toppings: strawberry, blueberry, or raspberry.

Of the three donuts, the Cannoli was the best. This donut was made in a limited number and offered for one day only. It was cut in half and filled with cannoli filling, dusted with powdered sugar and chocolate glaze, and topped off with cannoli chips.

However, the Samoa donut tasted just like the Girl Scout cookie. Samoas were my favorite cookie when I was in Girl Scouts, and this donut transported me right back to my cookie-selling days.

The Cheesecake donut was a lot like the Cannoli in that it was also a filled donut, and the raspberry topping was a nice touch. This was a little difficult to eat, since it had a runny fruit topping, so a fork was needed to properly enjoy it.

Eileen Sarne, a retired nurse, says Doughology is one of her favorite places to come for donuts.

“You can’t get anything like this on Long Island,” she said, “the flavors are always changing and the coffee is great.”

With a warm interior and plenty of seating, Doughology is a great place to gather with friends and family or to order a dozen to go. With endless possibilities, Doughology is one of Long Island’s best-kept (and most delicious) secrets.
