KING LEAR

Based on the commentary that the speaker presented on King Lear’s Act 1 scene 1, I found it interesting how he described King Lear and his daughters. At the beginning he mentions how King Lear wants to give away his kingdom but will only do it based on how nice his daughters answer his question which is pretty straightforward in the scene.

Through the video I learned how King Lear was portrayed as a child due to his age even though he has all this power because as people get closer to their third age they start to act like kids. I found this point interesting because I never realized the connection his behavior had with his age. I like the example the speaker gave on how King Lear acted like some seven-year olds in the playground who gives the other kid all his candy because he said what he wanted to hear. In the play all the three daughters responded to him, but I found Cordelia to be the most transparent and honest about her love to her dad. The speaker also talks about Cordelia as the good one out of the rest of her sisters because she brought a good point after hearing her sisters long exaggerated answers. Cordelia questions where are their love for their husbands which is the main turning point on the scene since she goes against her father from that point on. I also agree with the comparison the speaker does between Goneril and Regan’s answers. Both answers sounded fake with contradictions to me which shows how they are as daughters which may foreshadow their actions towards their father later on in the play. Overall, I agree with the different points the speaker makes about the scene since blindness has been a main thing shown in every character except Cordelia since she didn’t go along with the rest of the characters.
