Metamorphosis By Franz Kafka

“How about if I sleep a little bit longer and forget all this nonsense”

“He thought back on his family with deep emotion and love. His conviction that he would have to disappear was, if possible, even firmer than his sister’s. He remained in this state of empty and peaceful reflection until the tower clock struck three in the morning. He still saw that outside the window everything was beginning to grow light. Then, without his consent, his head sank down to the floor, and from his nostrils streamed his last weak breath.”

These lines give the story a whole turning point. This is my favorite part because it is when he first became an insect he did not want to accept it. Gregor was in denial. He was worried about work and what other people would say. He didn’t fully understand that he was an insect. He was just annoyed that he woke up late and won’t be able to go to work on time or to work at all. Gregor cares more about what society and what his family thinks over caring about himself. This connects to identity theme in a way. I really liked this video about Metamorphosis by the way it was made. The visuals and explanation kept me entertained and allowed me to learn more about the story in a different way. Isolation and rejection are two major themes emphasized throughout the story. The speaker brings an interesting point about one of the theories behind Metamorphosis which is imperialism and anti semitism. The hardships the character Gregor goes through reflects similar problems Franz went through during his childhood. In conclusion the speaker did a very good interpretation of the story and opened new perspectives about Metamorphosis for me.
