The “New Year’s Sacrifice” by Lu Xun’s is a very interesting story that reflect a lot what women go through in the chinese tradition. I think the author did a good job being able to feel the sadness of the main character. I found it to be a very touching story. Xiang Lin’s Wife endures much in her life and shows how it affects her throughout her later years. She then fears on how it will affect her in the afterlife. The traumatic events that took place early in her life along with disrespectful comments from those in her community led to a fear in her mind about what would happen to her after she died. Some background information is that she lost her first husband and, as is finally revealed, ran from her remaining king to live elsewhere and work for a family in the area. As a widow she becomes a secondary citizen in the eyes of others in her community. The family she once ran away from kidnaps her which is the main turning point of the story. More tragic events keep happening to her which made me question why did the author create the story this way. These terrible events cause her to question what her religious beliefs have in store for her and Lu Xun again is able to show Chinese ideals in a type of double standard held over women in these traditional views.
As I kept reading I realized how the author connected with the theme of women’s suffrage and how many traditions viewed women as their property to control. Apart from showing me how women are treated in the chinese culture I was able to connect it with hispanic culture. Based on the stories my grandmother told me, her as a young women also went through many tragic events while being married with my grandfather. Years ago, I believe in most countries women were seen as just housewives or be the slave of their husband. Women were treated like a property instead of a human being and torture was given to them without deserving it.
