The literacy is defined the ability to read and write. Around the world there are millions of people who are illiterate so is a global problem. Although at different rates, almost every society around the globe is affected by the issue of illiteracy. Even the most developed nations struggle with high rates of illiteracy. The United States is just an example of a developed nation with high rates of illiteracy. According to Huffpost, some thirty-two (32) million adults in the U.S. cannot read. If we are to put those numbers into percentage, that’s fourteen (14) percent of the Americans.

Therefore, there are a number of steps that must be taken if we are to fight illiteracy. The article “How to Improve Literacy Rates in America” from the teach-nology website mentions some of the forms to improve literacy, “Parents can improve literacy by inspiring their children to read from a very young. Government can improve literacy by raising the budget on education and technology education followed by a proper plan, researching the effectiveness of schools when it comes to increasing literacy rates so that the government can find out if the teaching methods should be revised “. I think we need to focus also on the people who are illiterate now. That’s what my is ad about, a program to help every illiterate person to overcome illiteracy, focusing among adults.

My advertisement aims to persuade the audience to overcome illiteracy, especially focusing in adults. The reason that I did choose this audience it’s because there are 32 million illiterate adults and we have to contribute with programs to reduce this number and it can help us as a whole society: development of society, reduce poverty, peace, but also help them individually in health, empowerment.

As we know literacy contribute in almost every aspect in our lives, using literacy for almost everything, from reading directions to filling out important applications. People who are illiterate sometimes feel shame and fear for their inability, and end up harming themselves due to stress.  In the ABC article “Living in the Shadows: Illiteracy in America” study author Dr. David Baker of Northwestern University explains the importance of literacy stating, ‘Literacy it is a life and death issue, illiteracy affects your health in so many different ways,’ he said, from inability to properly follow instructions to not knowing about common conditions or what symptoms to look for. Baxley a 45-year-old woman from inability to read she avoided to see a doctor out of fear she would have to fill out a medical form or read a prescription and how literacy have affected her health “My health is poor now, but I really believe that’s because I never went to the doctor and had my physicals and stuff that I should have had,” Baxley admitted.

All the difficulties and struggles illiterate people face, like Baxley, it should stop once and forever, joining the program is the first step that needs to be taken. We’ll start programs in New York City in every borough with a small group of volunteer tutors and as the group gets bigger we are going to welcome everyone who want to help society. Publication of the ad “Learn to read now so you can write the future later” on “The New York Times” is going to help because is well known newspaper in New York, where would send information to everyone who knows people who aren’t literate. It should be posted on the first page because usually that’s where would take the attention of the readers.
