Process Writing: Reading Response 1

This is the prompt for the first Process Writing piece. It is a Reading Response, which are brief written responses posted as blog posts to our course website.

After reading “The Power Chapter” in Data Feminism, please submit a 300-500 word response to the following:

On page 23, CDC official William Callaghan is quoted as saying “What we choose to measure is a statement of what we value in health.” D’Ignazio and Klein respond, “We might edit his statement to add that it’s a measure of who we value in health, too.” Think through these quotes and write in response to the following:

  • Why do you think this opening example, along with Callaghan and D’Ignazio and Klein’s interpretations, is an example of the importance of “examining power,” or to “nam[e] and explai[n] the forces of oppression that are so baked into our daily lives…that we often don’t even see them”?
  • What other examples from the chapter support your answer (be sure to use direct quotes so we can go back and find the location of those example or examples in the chapter–we can use ctrl+f or cmd+f )?
  • Optional: Any examples that you have from other things you have read or things you have experienced?

When posting, make sure to check the category “Posts” and “Reading Response 1.” Post it by 9am on Monday, 2/8.
