In regard to the Serena Williams example it shows what kind of power celebrities can have and how bad a situation or how uneven it has to get before someone speaks out about it. The power that celebrities have shows that all of us have a story, but some of us have a larger stage to present on. When the ‘presentation’ is finished some of us can relate and speak back to that person. But does that cure our problems forever or temporarily just because we heard someone go through the same situation?
One thing that I feel like I saw pop up on my news feeds and was spoken about throughout the past few years was prison reform. D’Ignazio and Klein state,”For people in positions of power and privilege, issues of race and gender and class and ability—to name only a few—are OPP: other people’s problems.” President Trump was the go to guy but getting to him there definitely had to be someone with power. Ms. Kim Kardashian West who all of the sudden goes from having a camera following her for a living to her lobbying President Trump. She proved that this isn’t other people’s problems and became heavily involved in raising awareness with this issue. In my opinion, someone’s freedom shouldn’t depend on a celebrity’s influence. This kind of system should draw attention in another way. Prior to this getting a lot of attention I have never heard about it nor knew what it meant. There has to be a kind of change where issues like these can be done without someone powerful.
