American-style Chinese Food

According to this news report from CBS, we can see that these American entrepreneurs have decided to take what Americans call Chinese food and bring it to China. The foods that are popular in China are shown to be foods we don’t associate with the Chinese food we know.   The news report shows some of the American aspects of Chinese food such as the take out boxes as well as the fortune cookies, General Tso’s chicken, the Skippy peanut butter, Heinz ketchup, and Mott’s applesauce used in these Chinese dishes. They even mentioned that they had to ship certain ingredients from America to get the “Chinese food” that Americans know about (CBS). This story demonstrated how Chinese food that first came over to America, with Chinese migration starting in 1848 and the first Chinese restaurant in the US in San Francisco in 1849, has diversified and evolved over the past century (Institute of Food Technologists 2013). China does have other regional Chinese cuisines but the one that is predominantly part of our society is this American style one. In the US there are more than 43,000 Chinese restaurants which is more than any other domestic fast food restaurants like McDonalds (Chen 2014). This American style Chinese food for the most part is less spicy than the authentic foods and more MSG and deep frying to give foods more flavor (Institute of Food Technologists 2013).
